IBPS PO and SBI Bank PO Exam: Know the Similarities and Differences

  • There are conducted two online test, the Main exam and Prelims.
  • Marks for IBPS PO and SBI Bank PO are 100.
  • Common sections found in Main exam of IBPS and SBI is English, Reasoning, Computer Knowledge and General Knowledge.
  • The final selection in both the exams is based upon personal HR interview of shortlisted candidates. However, weightage given to interview is quite different in both the exams.


  • IBPS (Inst. of Banking Personnel Selection) is regarded to be a nodal agency to recruit Probationary Officers of almost twenty three public sector banks, excluding the SBI. The latter is known to conduct exams on its own to recruit candidates for different vacancies present in its branches across the country.
  • In IBPS PO exam, only objective test is taken. But in SBI PO exam, Mains Exam (Phase II) is conducted in two parts, namely descriptive and objective.
  • Four sections are present in SBI PO Main exam objective type test, namely, General Awareness, English Language, Computer & Marketing, Reasoning, Interpretation and Data Analysis. Equal weightage of 50 marks is given. The objective tests in IBPS comprises of five sections having unequal weightage, namely, 50 marks of Quantitative Aptitude, 40 marks of English language, 50 marks of Reasoning, 20 marks of Computer and 40 marks of General Awareness.
  • Two separate sections are present in IBPS Exam, namely Computer Knowledge and General Awareness. But in SBI Exam, single section is present consisting of questions that are related to Computer know-how, Marketing Knowledge and General Knowledge.
  • In IBPS (Main), Quantitative Aptitude section is mainly Arithmetic. In SBI’s Main exam’s objective portion, Data Analysis and Interpretation Section are based upon data understanding and assessment provided in table form.
  • No descriptive test is found in IBPS Main Exam. But in SBI Main exam, descriptive test of one hour is there that is of 50 marks. The questions in it are 30 marks of essay writing and 20 marks of letter writing.
  • IBPS Phase II comprises of 100 marks of Personal Interview. In SBI Bank, the same is 30 marks of Personal Interview and 20 marks of Group Discussion.
