Everything to Know About International Baccalaureate

Formed 50 years ago, International Baccalaureate is an educational foundation headquartered at Geneva, Switzerland. It provides four different educational programs for different age groups ranging from 3 to 19 years of age. Each one of the programs is designed to nurture the pupils with valuable knowledge and encourage them to think critically to achieve success in University and the life that follows. The IB’s curriculum is being taught by specially trained IB teaching professionals in as many as about 5000 schools in over 150 countries globally.

The Course

The IB diploma program is a rigorous program mean for students of 16 to 19 years of age which challenges them academically while being balanced at the same time. The course encourages its student to engage in various subjects which helps them explore and find out what spikes their interest for further studies in university. Most of the subjects that they can choose are split into two different levels – A standard level (SL) and a higher level (HL).

The SL courses require the students to take up a range of disciplines and invest at least 150 hours of instructional time spanning over 2 years. In the HL courses the students are encouraged to take up subjects where their interest lies deeply in addition to the core subjects that are taught in the SL course as well. The course recommends its students to spend at least 240 instructional hours over a span of 2 years in case they enroll in the HL course. The assessment criteria for both the courses are equally demanding and their aims of educating the student are the same.

The Subjects that are on offer

The students of this program can choose from the following list of subjects –

  • Literature and Language
  • Language Acquisition
  • Individuals and Societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Art

Each of these subjects may be taken at the Standard as well as the High level. The students must take at least three of these subjects at HL. For example, a unique combination of IB Math HL with sciences and art. In addition to that, there are three core elements which are compulsory and an unavoidable part of this program – the extended essay, the theory of knowledge and creativity, activity and service. Choosing such unique combination of subjects might not be possible in other traditional educational programs.

The Core Elements

  • THE EXTENDED ESSAY: The program requires the students to write an essay engaging 4000 words on a subject from the list of EE approved subjects. It gives the student the opportunity to explore out of the subjects they are studying as the essay can be written on an interdisciplinary topic. This not only develops curiosity among the young minds but also encourages thinking outside the box.
  • THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE: This course mainly revolves around knowledge, mainly, its meaning, nature and limitations. It is one course that all students are required to be a part of to get the diploma. This element of the course requires the student to write an essay of about 1600 words and an internally assessed presentation. This part of the course encourages critical thinking in the student.
  • CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY & SERVICE: this element of the course encourages personal growth in the student by encouraging them to participate in social service, physical and creative activities.

If you are in India, you can find teaching centers that will help your kid with this program. They have teaching professionals ranging from IB chemistry tutor to art teacher to help your kid through the rigorous course.
